Laurie Metcalf

Biography

Laurie Metcalf is an original ensemble member of Steppenwolf Theatre Company. She has performed in dozens of Steppenwolf productions, and made her first appearance in New York in Steppenwolf’s acclaimed 1984 production of Lanford Wilson's Balm in Gilead at the Circle Rep Theater. She has had the pleasure of working on productions by amazing playwrights including Martin McDonagh, Terrence McNally, Don Dilillo, Caryl Churchill, Willy Russell, Alexandra Gerston, Beth Henley, Michael Weller, George Bernard Shaw, Tom Stoppard, Garry Marshall, Kaufman & Hart, Lynn Siefert, Bruce Norris, Sam Shepard, Alan Ayckbourn, Tennessee Williams, Harold Pinter, Jane Anderson, Arthur Miller, David Mamet and Neil Simon. She was Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s 2015 “Women in the Arts” honoree for her extraordinary contribution to the field.

She has received some of the industry’s highest honors: three Primetime Emmy Awards and two Tony Awards, including her most recent Tony win for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in Broadway’s Three Tall Women. She has been nominated for one Academy Award, eleven Primetime Emmy Awards, five Tony Awards, three Golden Globe Awards and three SAG Awards. Her performances in the TV series Roseanne and the 2017 film Lady Bird (alongside fellow Steppenwolf ensemble members Tracy Letts and Lois Smith) have been highly praised. Other film credits include Desperately Seeking Susan, Leaving Las Vegas, Toy Story, JFK, Internal Affairs and Uncle Buck. She can be seen on TV in The Conners starting fall 2018 and will be heard in the much-anticipated animated movie Toy Story 4 in summer 2019.
